The theme for this year's conference was “Opening New Frontiers for Research and Education Networking in Africa” in recognition of the opportunities and challenges created by the arrival of marine fibre at the East coast of Africa as well as the increasing penetration of national fibre in different countries sub Saharan Africa.

This conference attracted about 120 participants from Eastern and Southern Africa, consisting of people responsible for implementing national research and education networks within their different countries, as well as some of the regional research and content networks.
